  • Description

An Israeli Air Force helicopter has been playing a major role in improving irrigation to an arid area of the Jordan Valley.

The helicopter was called in on Sunday (3 March) by the Agricultural Department of the military government for the West Bank to help install a new water pipeline across an old Turkish aquaduct. In a state of disrepair for years, the aquaduct crosses the Wadi leading from Ramallah near Jerusalem toward Jericho, one of the world's most ancient cities, and the Dead Sea. Repairs to the ruined section of the aquaduct were made possible when the Israeli Air Force helicopter ferried a pre-welded steel pipe to the area and lowered it into place. Israeli soldiers and airmen then manhandled the pipe into place watched by scores of Arab farmers led by the Mayor of Jericho.

Following more minor repairs, this time on ground level, the ancient aquaduct will once more be carrying water for irrigation in the area.
