    BRITAIN'S WORLD CHAMPION DRIVER GRAHAM HILL TODAY (SUNDAY) MADE RACING HISTORY BY WINNING THE MONACO GRAND PRIX FOR THE FIFTH TIME IN SEVEN YEARS. PIERS COURAGE ALSO OF BRITAIN, DRIVING A BRABHAM FORD, NUMBER 16, FINISHED SECOND AND JOE SIFFERT OF SWITZERLAND, IN A LOTUS FORD, NUMBER 9, CAME IN THIRD.

    HILL IS THE ONLY DRIVER EVER TO WIN FIVE GRANDS PRIX ON THE TRACK. AND, IN THE TWO YEARS HE HAS NOT WON AT MONTE CARLO, IN 1966 AND 1967, HILL FINISHED SECOND AND THIRD.

    TODAY, HILL DROVE A LOTUS, NUMBER 1, AND COMPLETED THE 80 LAPS MONTE CARLO IN ONE HOUR, 56 MINUTES AND 59.4 SECONDS, AT A RECORD AVERAGE SPEED OF 129.056 KILOMETRES PER HOUR.

    ONLY SEVEN OF THE 16 STARTERS FINISHED THE COURSE, AND EIGHT HAD DROPPED OUT BY THE HALFWAY STAGE.

    BRITAIN'S BRUCE MCLAREN, DRIVING A MCLAREN, NUMBER 4, TOOK PART IN THE RACE, AS DID JACKIE ICKX, SCOTLAND'S JACKIE STEWART, JACK BRABHAM OF AUSTRALIA AND BRITAIN'S JOHN SURTEES.

    PRINCE RAINIER AND PRINCESS GRACE OF MONACO WATCHED THE CONTEST. AFTER HILL HAD CROSSED THE FINISH LINE, HE WAS CONGRATULATED BY THE PRINCESS.
