  • Description

The Japanese Prime Minister, Kakuei Tanaka, arrived in Mexico City on Thursday (12 September), his first call on an official visit to Mexico, Brazil and Canada. He was given a colourful reception at Mexico City airport and was welcomed by the Mexican President, Luis Echeverria.

In his talks with President Echeverria on Friday (13 September) Mr. Tanaka was expected to raise the question of extended Japan Airlines' flights beyond Mexico City, and Japanese investments in the Mexican tourist industry.

The main purpose of his tour however was likely to be economic co-operation. Japanese officials, sensitive to charges that their country is interested only in satisfying its hunger for resources, have stressed however that Mr. Tanaka's tour is designed "to promote multilateral diplomacy through dialogue and co-operation".

Mr. Tanaka has been warned by party colleagues at home to avoid the "shopping basket" approach which characterised his South-east Asian visit in January, a tour marred by violent anti-japanese demonstrations.

After his stay in Mexico, Mr. Tanaka was due to fly to Brazil where he will stay until September 21st, then on to Bermuda for a brief meeting with President Ford of the United States on route to Canada.
