    A rematch of this years' Wimbledon mens singles finalists Jim Connors of the United States and Ken Rosewall of Australia - was the major result of the play in the United States Open Tennis Championships at Forest Hills in New York on Sunday (8 September).

    Wimbledon champion, Canners, beat Roscoe Tanner of the United States in one semi-final, while Rosewall, the 39-year old veteran bear fellow countryman, John Newcombe in another semi. Canners and Rosewall - separated in age by 17 years - were to play off in the finals on Monday (9 September).

    Connors showed some of hi famed "killer instinct" when he beat unseeded Tanner from Tennessee 7-6, 7-6, 6-4.

    Rosewall - who took the United States Open singles in 1956 and 1970 - whipped 30-year old Newcombe 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3. Rosewall was seeded fifth and Newcombe second.

    Rosewall our-paced Newcombe and often caught him on the wrong feet with well placed drop shots and accurate placing of the ball.

    After the game, Jim Connors said he was nervous a the prospect of facing " a guy who's a living legend."

    In the Wimbledon final, Connors overwhelmed Rosewall 6-1, 6-1, 6-4.

    SYNOPSIS: The Untied States men's spen tennis title holdet, Australia's John Newcombe, serves against fellow countryman Ken Rosewall in Sunday's semi-final. In the first set Newcombe had the upper hand - but it was the only set the younger man could win.

    After a slow start, Rosewall the best middle aged player in the world, tightened his control of the match. Thirty nine year old Resewall won the second and took the tiebreaker in the third set - for a two-one lead.

    With every point Rosewall made more certain of a place in his fourth Forest Hills singles final. He won the title here in 1956 and 1970.

    By the end Newcombe looked utterly lost, and the crowd cheered his conquserer just as they did when he got to the Wimbledon final earlier in the summer.

    In the second semi final Jimmy Connors, who trounced Rosewall at Wimbledon, faced unseeded Roscoe Tanner of Tennessee.

    Tanner fought hard in the first and second set but lost both on the best-of-nine-point tiebreakers .... 7-6, 7-6

    Conners ??? Chris Evert lest her semi final to Evenne Geelagong.

    Jimmy Conners made na mistake. But Tanner did not disgrace himself against the number one seed.

    Tanner has only dropped one service game in the third set, but that was enough to lose 6-4 and give Connors a straight sets victory.

    The final will new be a Wimbledon rematch. Connors against Rosewall.
