    IT WAS THE FIRST TIME AN ENGLISH HORSE HAD WON THE DERBY FOR FIVE YEARS. THE COLT, WINNING AT 5-1, GAINED AN EXCITING VICTORY AFTER HOLDING UP THE RACE FOR 15 MINUTES WITH FAULTY PLATES.

    CHARLOTTOWN WON BY A NECK OVER PRETENDRE, AFTER A PHOTO-FINISH. IT WAS THE NARROWEST DERBY VICTORY FOR TEN YEARS. BLACK PRINCE WAS THIRD, FIVE LENGTHS BEHIND. THERE WERE 25 STARTERS.

    THERE WERE PLENTY OF INCIDENTS: IT POURED, THE USUAL ENGLISH DOWNPOUR; ONE HORSE AN IRISH CHALLENGERS, NORTHERN UNION, BROKE A FETLOCK AND HAD TO BE DESTROYED; CHARLOTTOWN'S OWNER, LADY ZIA WERNHER, SAID SHE ALMOST FAINTED TO LEARN SHE'D WON; TWO HORSES WERE ORDERED TO UNDERGO DOPE TESTS AND THE FRENCH, WHO HAVE CHALLENGED SUCCESSFULLY SEVEN TIMES SINCE 1946, WERE ABSENT BECAUSE OF THE BAN ON SWAMP FEVER SUSPECTS AT CHANTILLY.
