  • Description

Government House - Melbourne - where the Governor, Sir Dallas Brooks, reviews the annual parade of the Victorian Corps of Commissionaires. All the Corps four-hundred-and-sixty members who attend are ex-serviceman. This is Commissionaire Scaralis ... the Victoriah Corp is twelve years old, and here those who've been members ten years receive from the Governor their Awards of Merit. Mrs. Lamond, of East Melbourne, receives the award on behalf of her late husband.

Another Commissionaire is Laurie Childs of Foster who was a Commissioner with the A.B.C. for ten years. He now has a small farm, but does occasional jobs when needed. Thirty Awards of Merit are issued at the ceremony.

Commissionaires, like Mr. McLaughlin, work as guards, liftmen and messengers. Their dark uniform and smart bering are well known in Melbourne streets. Here, for the first time, as they parade before Sir Dallas Brooks, they carry their own colours.
