  • Description

One of the people arrested in Venezuela in connection with the kidnapping lat February of U.S. businessman William Niehous has been found dead in his cell.

SYNOPSIS: The man, Mr. Jorge Rodriguez, was buried on Tuesday (27 July). He was Secretary of the Venezuelan Socialist League. He was one of nine people, including three women who were detained last week in the hunt for the kidnappers of William Niehoue -- the general manager of the local branch of the U.S. based Owens Illinois Glassware Company.

The Interior Minister of Venezuela, Senor Octavio Lepage, said four policemen had been detained in connection with the death of Rodriguez. Senor Lepage also said that two parliamentary deputies had connections with the left wing guerrillas who kidnapped Mr. Niehous. He said the government would take constitutional steps to lift the parliamentary immunity of the two deputies so that they could stand trial.

The deputies were named as Senor Salom Mesa of the People's Electoral Movement and Senor Fortunate Herrera of the Democratic Republican Union. Senor Mesa said he was prepared to cooperate with investigators to demonstrate his innocence. Senor Herrera said he had a quiet and clean conscience. Mr. Lepage said Mr. Nehous' fate was not known. He said efforts were being made to convince those who were holding Mr. Niehous that it would be difficult for them to escape if they cold-bloodedly killed him.
