Soccer... and the current champions of World football, West Germany, have arrived in Argentina to defend their World Cup title. Meanwhile in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo the Spanish World cup side could only manage a draw against Uruguay in a warm-up match played on Wednesday (24 May).
SYNOPSIS: By the day, football fever in Argentina has been more intense. With the 16 World Cup teams now arriving the months of waiting are nearly at an end. The co-favourites for this year's cup, West Germany, were met by strict security measures when they arrived at Cordoba on Wednesday (24 May). The West German trainer, Herr Helmut Schoen, said his team's main concern was to retain the title. He said he could not make a comparison between his present team and the squad which won the World Cup in 1974 . Her Schoen rated Brazil and Argentina with his won team as top contenders for the cup.
Meanwhile in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo, Spain playing from left to right, were having their last warm up match against Uruguay before travelling on to Argentina and the world Cup series. It was disappointing game for the Spaniards against a scratch Uruguayan selection. The Spanish side was weak on attack and after an early spurt gaps developed in the midfield. Spain soon became bogged down by the defence of the Uruguayan team, which was put together just 24 hours before the match on Wednesday (24 May).
The Spanish game was based on long passes forward from their midfield to their strikers on the wings, but the tactic never succeeded in penetrating the Uruguayan defence. The game ended in a nil-nil draw. Spain's Hungarian coach, Ladislan Kubala, told journalists that the poor quality of the pitch at the Centenario Stadium had hindered his players. He said it was a game where the Spanish team did not take risks. He said we could not forget that his team was only a step away from the World Cup and Uruguay understood the fact as well and played in a gentlemanly way. The final score again Spain nil Uruguay nil.
