  • Description

In Kampuchea (Cambodia) Khmer Rouge guerrilla forces loyal to ousted Premier Pol Pot,
have launched renewed counter-attacks against Vietnamese backed insurgents. The
outbreak of fresh fighting is causing more refugees to seek refuge across the
    Kampuchea-Thai border.

SYNOPSIS: Since losing Phnom Penh to the pro-Vietnamese troops a month ago, the
Khmer Rouge soldiers have retreated north, establishing camps near the border
with Thailand. It is from these makeshift camps that the guerrillas have struck
back at the Vietnamese-backed forces. In the last week, the Khmer Rouge claim to
have killed almost three hundred Vietnamese troops. The guerrillas have been
waiting to go back into action since being driven north in early January. But
the Khmer Rough commanders face a daunting task. Analysts estimate that their
forces' strength of seventy thousand may have been depleted by a third since the
    campaign began.

The number of refugees escaping across the border to Thailand increase daily.

Most say the new regime has treated the people in Kampuchea with consideration
since taking control. However, the intensive fighting following the Khmer Rouge
counter- attacks means more people are fleeing into Thailand, causing severe
    problems for the Thai Authorities.

Refugee camps have been constructed by the Thai army at Asia village, about
thirty kilometres (18.5 miles) north-east of Aranyaprathet. Accommodation has
been prepared for about five hundred so far. But it is thought at least five
thousand refugees are squatting just across the border. Thai officials believe
many of the refugees are families of Khmer Rouge soldiers, who will join them if
    the counter-offensive fails.

Thailand is conscious that the fighting could spill across the border, and
security measures have been taken at the refugee camps.
