Mr. William Rountree, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East Affairs, flew into Beirut?
Mr. William Rountree, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East Affairs, flew into Beirut Dec 8.
He was met at the airport by the American Ambassador to the Lebanon, Mr. Robert McClintock, and officials from the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.
Mr. Rountree will stay in the Lebanon for two days, then visit other Middle East countries for talks with American Ambassadors.
The visit coincides with a broadcast made by the Iraqi Premier, Brigadier Kassem, Dec 8, revealing an armed plot timed for Dec 9 against the Government. He said that the 'corrupters' were now under arrest and would be tried for treason. These plotters, said Brigadier Kassem, were working with 'foreign quarters' to overthrow the Iraqi Government.
