Background: At least nineteen people were injured when a gelignite bomb exploded in a Belfast public house today (Monday). The bomb, containing about 20 pounds (10 kilos) of gelignite exploded at midday, just half an hour after a public house had opened for business. Very few people were in the bar at the time but the street outside was busy with shoppers. Many of the injured were hit by flying glass.
Had the bomb exploded five minutes later, it would have ripped through hundreds of school children returning home for lunch from a nearby school.
