Background: The 1976 Carnival season opened in Portugal on Friday (27 February) and will run until Ash Wednesday (3 March).

The festivities take many forms, with singing, dancing and street parades by costumed bands.

But for many young people with ambitions of becoming great matadors, the Portuguese carnival is the time when they get their first chance of fighting a real bull in a ring watched by thousands of spectators.

The carnival spirit still pervades the entire affair, but it is a chance to fight a bull.

At Camp Pequeno in Lisbon on Sunday (29 February), the scene was relaxed and festive for the fights and the young matadors put up tremendous performance to delight their fans.

It was mostly fun and no one took the fights seriously except, perhaps, the bulls.

In any case, Portuguese bull-fighting rules remained in force and the bulls were not killed as they would have been in Spain.

The clowns joined in the fun too and Sunday was an enjoyable experience for the thousands who took part in the festivities whether as spectators or bull-fighters.
