  • Description

Supporters of the Argentinean President, Maria Estela Peron, had a solid victory on Saturday (12 April) in the first elections in the country since the death of President Juan Peron last year.

The election was to choose a new Governor, Deputy Governor and 32 members for the local assembly in the province of Misiones, about 800 miles (1300 kilometres) from the capital, Buenos Aires.

It was seen as the first test of popularity of the national Peronist Government since the death of General Peron.

Candidates loyal to his wife, the new President, squashed a challenge by dissident left-wing Peronists, who argue that she and her advisers have betrayed the ideals of the later General.

The ruling Peronist party, Frejuli, won 46 percent of the vote and half the seats in the assembly. The dissident Peronists won only three seats with the rest going to the Radical Party.

Just over 75 percent of those eligible to vote did so.

The elections were caused by the death of the former Governor and his Deputy in an air crash in 1973.
