    Background: Retired Lt. Gen. John B. Coulter of US Army, one of the most unforgettable man to all Koreans, attended today in a unveiling ceremony of his own statue which was built by Korean people in honor of his great contribution to Korea people, in war and peace. In today's ceremony, attended by president Rhea, members of Cabinet, the Diplomatic Corps, high ranking military leaders of UN and ROK and many other Korean and foreign dignitaries, the Coulter's status was officially unveiled by the General Magruder, Commander-in-Chief, UN Command.

    In 1948, 3 years after Korean liberation from Japanese occupation, Gen Coulter served in Korea as a 7th Division Commander. In 1950, when communist north Korea attacked south Korea, gen Coulter fought against communist invasion in Pohang area as a Commander of Task Force Jackson which successfully defended the Kyungju area against the final major assault of the communist forces.

    When the Korean war ended, Gen Coulter came to Korea as Agent General of United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency and helped Koreans rebuilding their country from war damages. During his service as UNKRA Chief in Korea, gen coulter directed the $140 million economic reconstruction program.

    In today's unveiling ceremony, President Rhee and General Magruder highly praised Coulter serve both in war and peace.

    General Coulter and his wife presented in todays' event and received honor.

    This Statue, which is located at Itaewon, Seoul, not far from the present HQs of UNC and 8th Army, was erected under the auspices of a committee of Korean citizens with donations received mainly from private organizations and persons.
