    President Leopold Senghor of Senegal is continuing a ten-day official visit to the Ivory Coast.

    He arrived at Abidjan on Tuesday (December 7th) and was welcomed by the president of the Ivory Coast, M. Houphouet-Boigny.

    It's President Senghor's first visit to the Ivory Coast.

    For his arrival, the city of Abidjan was brightly decorated with flags -- and the route from the airport to the city centre was lined with people, including thousands of schoolchildren.

    SYNOPSIS: Republic Square in Abidjan was decorated with flags to mark the arrival of President Senghor of Senegal - who on Tuesday began a ten-day official visit to the Ivory Coast.

    Official welcoming ceremonies for President Senghor were held at Abidjan Airport. There a troupe of Ivory Coast dancers performed in his honour -- and a 21-gun salute was fired as he was greeted by President Houphouet-Boigny of the Ivory Coast.

    This is President Senghor's first official visit to the ivory Coast.

    High-praise for President Senghor came from his host, President Houphouet-Boigny. He described the Senegal head of state as "the symbol of the history of a brave people with whom the Ivory Coast has always had privileged relationships of confidence and friendship".

    President Senghor responded by describing President houphouet-Boigny as one of the great guides of the third world.

    From the airport, President Senghor was to drive through streets lined with thousands of schoolchildren. Then he began his round of official duties by meeting heads of diplomatic missions in Abidjan.
