  • Description

STUDENTS DEMONSTRATED IN DJAKARTA ON FRIDAY AGAINST THE POLICIES AND METHODS OF THE NEW INDONESIAN ADMINISTRATION. THE FOREIGN MINISTER, ADAM MALIK, RECEIVED A DELEGATION FROM THE 5,000 MEMBERS OF THE POWERFUL STUDENTS ACTION FRONT WHO MARCHED ON HIS OFFICE.

IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT THE STUDENT ACTION FRONT HAD DEMONSTRATED AGAINST THE POLICIES AND METHODS OF THE NEW ADMINISTRATION. THEY HAVE CHARGED THE GOVERNMENT WITH FAILING TO MOVE QUICKLY ENOUGH TO SOLVE INDONESIA'S SERIOUS ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL TROUBLES.

MR. MALIK TOLD THE DEMONSTRATORS THAT THE REPAIR OF THE COUNTRY'S SHATTERED ECONOMY DEPENDED ON A RAPID END TOT HE UNDECLARED WAR WITH MALAYSIA. HIS STATEMENT FOLLOWED INDONESIAN PEACE OVERTURES WHICH MAY END THE THREE-YEAR OLD CONFRONTATION OF MALAYSIA, WHICH HAS BEEN A SEVER DRAIN ON INDONESIA'S ALREADY STRAINED ECONOMY.

A SEVEN MAN STUDENT DELEGATION HANDED A REQUEST TO MR.MALIK AND DEPUTY PREMIER SULTAN HAMENGKU BUWONO FOR IMMEDIATE IMPLEMENTATION OF CONCRETE PROGRAMMES TO IMPROVE THE ECONOMY.

THE STUDENTS LISTENED TO THE SPEECHES OF MR. MALIK AND THE SULTAN QUIETLY AND APPLAUDED AT VARIOUS POINTS. THEY DISPERSED PEACEFULLY AFTER ABOUT TWO HOURS.

ON THE FOLLOWING DAY BOTH MR. MALIK AND THE MALAYSIAN DEPUTY PREMIER, TUN ABDUL RAZAK, WERE REPORTED AS "STANDING BY" TO ATTEND PROSPECTIVE PEACE TALKS.
