    AT LEAST 11 PEOPLE DIED WHEN A RAILWAY FREIGHT WAGON, LOADED WITH HIGH EXPLOSIVES, BLEW UP IN HANOVER TODAY (SUNDAY). THE BLAST KILLED NINE FIREMEN AND TWO RAILWAY WORKERS. ANOTHER THREE RAILWAY WORKERS ARE MISSING AND FEARED DEAD.

    THE WAGON WAS CARRYING 216 175-MILLIMETRE SHELLS WITHOUT FUSES FOR THE WEST GERMAN ARMY.

    IT EXPLODES AFTER HAVING BEEN STOPPED IN THE HANOVER-LINDEN GOODS STATION JUST OUTSIDE THIS NORTH GERMAN CITY. THE BLAST TORE TWO HUGE CRATERS INTO THE GROUND, SMASHED WINDOWS OVER A WIDE AREA AND CAUSED A NEARBY WAREHOUSE TO COLLAPSE.

    NINE PEOPLE ARE IN HOSPITAL WITH SERIOUS INJURIES AND SEVERAL OTHERS HAVE SUFFERED SLIGHT INJURIES.

    ONE OF THE RAILWAY MEN KILLED IN THE BLAST, DIETER LIEDKE, UNCOUPLED THE BURNING AMMUNITION FREIGHT CAR FROM THE FOUR OTHER TRUCKS ALSO CARRYING SHELLS. IN HIS NEXT ATTEMPT TO CONTROL THE FIRE WITH AN EXTINGUISHER HE WAS KILLED WHEN THE TRUCKS EXPLODED.

    THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS NOT YET KNOWN.
