  • Description

ONE OF THE FEW REMAINING LINKS BETWEEN SPAIN AND GIBRALTAR, THE "MONS CALPE" - A FERRY STEAMER PLYING BETWEEN THE ROCK AND THE MOROCCAN PORT OF TANGIER - MAY WELL BECOME THE NEXT TARGET OF THE SPANISH GOVERNMENT'S OPERATION AGAINST ALL COMMUNICATIONS IN AND OUT OF THE BRITISH COLONY.

ONE OF THE RESULTS OF SPAIN'S CLOSING DOWN OF ALL COMMUNICATIONS ACROSS THE LAND BORDER WITH GIBRALTAR IS THAT THE ONLY WAY IN OR OUT OF THE ROCK IS BY BRITISH EUROPEAN AIRWAYS TO LONDON; FLIGHTS TO TANGIER, AND THE "MONS CALPE". SOME TRAVELLERS HAVE FOUND THAT THEY CAN GET TO SPAIN BY LANDING AT TANGIER FROM THE "MONS CALPE" AND TRANSFERRING TO THE SPANISH FERRY WHICH TAKES THEM TO SPAIN'S MAINLAND AT ALGECIRAS.

NOW, SINCE SPAIN IS CLAIMING A TWELVE-MILE (20 KILOMETRE) TERRITORIAL WATER LIMIT, IT IS VERY LIKELY THAT THE WHOLE OF NARROW ALGECIRAS BAY WILL COME UNDER DISPUTE - THE LATEST IN THE CURRENT TUG-OF-WAR BETWEEN BRITAIN AND SPAIN OVER SOVEREIGNTY OF THE ROCK. AT PRESENT, BRITAIN DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE 12-MILE (20-KM) LIMIT AND THE BAY IS MARKED WITH A 3-MILE (5.5-KM) LIMIT SERIES OF BUOYS BEYOND WHICH SPANISH WARSHIPS RARELY VENTURE. IF, HOWEVER, SPAIN DECIDED TO PRESS ITS CLAIM AND ATTEMPTS TO ENFORCE THE LIMIT, THE "MONS CALPE" WILL BE ONE OF THE FIRST AND OBVIOUS TARGETS FOR THEIR NAVAL PATROLS - AND THE SMALL LOCAL FERRY COULD FIND ITSELF AT THE CENTRE OF WORLD ATTENTION.

THE "MONS CALPE", CARRYING VITAL SUPPLIES OF FRESH FOOD AND NUMBERS OF MOROCCAN WORKERS WHO ARE RAPIDLY REPLACING GIBRALTAR'S BANNED SPANISH LABOUR FORCE, STEAMS INTO ALGECIRAS BAY ON THE BRITISH SIDE OF THE BUOYS AND SWINGS IN TO BERTH ALONGSIDE THE LANDING STRIP WHICH IS ONLY A FEW HUNDRED YARDS (METRES) FROM THE CLOSED LAND FRONTIER BETWEEN SPAIN AND GIBRALTAR. THE FINAL STAGES OF HER JOURNEY - NORMALLY OBSERVED BY BOTH BRITISH AND SPANISH WARSHIPS PATROLLING THE AREA - ARE NOW COMING UNDER EVEN CLOSER SCRUTINY FROM BOTH SIDES.
