    REINFORCED POLICE UNITS WERE STATIONS AROUND THE CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF THE VALLEY. IN FRONT OF WHICH THE POLICY WAS HELD.

    THERE WERE FEARS THAT VIOLENCE MIGHT BREAK OUT.

    FOLLOWING A RIOTOUS DEMONSTRATION TWO WEEK AGO BUT THE WORKERS DISBANDED PEACEFULLY AFTER HEARING FOUR PRIESTS DENOUNCE POLICE REPRESSION AND CRITICIZE POLICIES.

    SPEAKERS AT THE RALLY INCLUDED FATHER FERNANDO FERNANDEZ, PARSON OF THE OUR LADY OF THE VALLEY CHURCH IN THIS LITTLE SUGAR TOWN IN TUCUMAN PROVINCE, AND THREE OTHER PRIESTS; AMADO DIP, DIMAS PACHECO AND ROQUE CARMONA.

    THE PRIESTS ARE MEMBERS OF THE SO CALLED OF THE CLERGY AND HAVE BEEN STRUGGLING TO IMPROVE WORKING CONDITIONS HERE.

    GROWING UNEMPLOYMENT EXISTS IN THE SUGAR-PRODUCING PROVINCES OF TUCUMAN, SALTA AND SANTIAGO DEL ESTERO AS A RESULT OF THE CLOSURE OF MANY LARGE PLANTATIONS AND MILLS, FOLLOWING A SERIOUS CRISIS IN THE ARGENTINE SUGAR INDUSTRY.
