    TWO MEN CHARGED WITH KIDNAPPING THE FOUR-YEAR-OLD SON OF FRENCH CAR MAGNATE ROLAND PEUGEOT TWO YEARS AGO, WENT ON TRIAL AT A COURT NEAR PARIS TODAY (MONDAY). THE ACCUSED ARE PIERRE LARCHER, 39, AND RAYMOND ROLLAND, 25, WHO POLICE ALLEGE, CONFESSED TO THE CRIME.

    POLICE LAUNCHED THE BIGGEST MANHUNT IN FRENCH CRIMINAL HISTORY AFTER ERIC PEUGEOT, THEN FOUR, WAS ABDUCTED AS HE BUILT A SANDCASTLE AT A PLAYGROUND NEAR PARIS IN APRIL, 1960.

    HIS PLAYMATES SAID THEY SAW A MAN CARRY HIM OFF INTO THE BUSHES AS THE PEUGEOT GOVERNESS SAT READING IN THE FAMILY CAR NEARBY. THE BOY WAS FOUND IN PARIS THREE DAYS LATER, AFTER HIS FATHER HAD PAID GBP36,000 RANSOM.

    LARCHER AND ROLLAND WERE ARRESTED 11 MONTHS LATER. POLICE SAID THEY HAD BEEN SPENDING LAVISHLY AT FASHIONABLE RESORTS. BOTH DEFENDANTS FACE POSSIBLE JAIL TERMS OF 20 YEARS WITH HARD LABOUR.
