INTRODUCTION: The East German cycling champion Emmanuel Raasch won the British Air Ferries Award for the Champion's sprint event at an international meet in London on Friday (8 April).

SYNOPSIS: Raasch, riding under number three, beat Gordon Singleton of Canada, in number 11, and number five, Jack Pieters of Holland, in a close final Singleton had earlier provided the crowd with the major talking point of the day--the defeat of world professional sprint champion, John Nicholson of Australia.

The event was the highlight of an international meeting. It attracted riders from Japan, England, Canada, Australia, Holland and other European countries.

Raasch took the lead early in the champions event, but he was forced to keep a close eye on the other two riders who were never far away from taking over the lead. He finished the race in 12.2 seconds.

The event carried a first prize of 15 pounds sterling, (26 U.S. dollars), a trophy and a sash.
