The United Nations Security Council has condemned the Rhodesian elections. A Council draft resolution described the elections as a sham, and called on all states to with-hold recognition of the representatives and organs of the new government. They also favoured continued strict observance of sanctions. Kuwait's Deputy Ambassador Abdul Mohsen El-Jeaan introduced the proposals.

The United States, Britain and France abstained. President Carter has yet to announce the United States policy. The French government says Britain is the only country empowered to exercise legitimate authority in Rhodesia, and British Ambassador Ivor Richard says the British Parliament must maintain its freedom of action.
