Background: After the private and "strictly secret" showing of models created for their Autumn-Winter collections, the Fontana sisters, Italy's famous couturiers, allowed our cameraman August 3 to film -exclusively - eight of the many exciting fashions at their Rome salon.
Two evening dresses emphasis the Fontana enthusiasms for the black-and-white look. A full length black evening dress of pure silk - featuring small shoulder straps - was trimmed with velvet bands. It contrasted sharply with a silver evening dress in pure silk faille, beaded, and featuring a halter neckline forming a framing collar. Both gowns were shorter in the front.
Cocktail dresses, again in black. A very elegant short cocktail dress in black lace was enhanced by fascinating beading. The longer bodice - a feature of the collection - was trimmed with a black velvet bow. Velvet was also used for another cocktail dress. This time the bodice was trimmed with a large silk faille band. A pure silk black print cocktail dress featured a motif of roses. The flamboyant flowers add to the two exciting puffed panels below a simple - but again long - bodice.
The "Domino Look" .. this is the name given by the Fontana sisters to a beautiful suit of pebble-dash wool tweed, trimmed only with four black velvet buttons. Beneath the small jacket; a black velvet blouse reaching below the hip-line. The "tear-drop" skirt largely resembles the harem line, but is much shorter.
An afternoon dress in "Deep Grape" wool tweed, featured a wide scarf-bolero and wide dollman sleeves.
A coat, cut on very severe lines, featured a very large collar. Its colour was described as "The Sand of Capri", which, I am told, resembles the colour of wet sand.
