  • Description

U.N. Secretary-General Hammarskjoeld arrived by air in Leopoldville, Congo, Jan 4, for talks with U.N. commanders and officials with President Kasavubu.

Congolese troops and U.N. soldiers from Tunisia, Morocco and the Sudan formed the guard of honour. Mr. Hammarskjoeld then flew by helicopter into the capital for talks at U.N. headquarters.

There had a taste of the violent factions of Congolese personalities in this first half year of independence: demonstrators yelled: 'Free Lumumba' and 'Uhuru' (Freedom). Colonel Mobutu was absent from Leopoldville.

Mr. Hammarskjoeld was due to leave the Congo for South Africa Jan 6.
