  • Description

THE IVORY COAST, ONE OF AFRICA'S FASTEST EXPANDING NATIONS, DISPLAYED MANY OF THE COUNTRY'S MASSIVE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS AT THE RECENT HABITAT AND URBANISM EXHIBITION IN ABIDJAN.

OPENING THE EXHIBITION IN THE FRENCH CULTURAL CENTRE, BUILDING AND TOWN PLANNING MINISTER MICHEL GOLY KOUASSI SAID THAT IT WOULD INDICATE THE SUCCESS WITH WHICH TOWN PLANNERS AND ARCHITECTS, FROM BOTH THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTORS, HAD COLLABORATED ON PROJECTS INITIATED BY THE GOVERNMENT.

ENGINEERS, SOCIALOGISTS AND ECONOMISTS HAVE ALSO BEEN INVOLVED IN PLANNING THE PROJECTS. THE COMMON AIM OF THE PLANNERS HAS BEEN TO INTEGRATE URBAN LIVING AND WORKING CONDITIONS OF THE HIGHEST STANDARD FOR THE 1970s AND 1980s.

SEVERAL FOREIGN DIPLOMATS ACCOMPANIED THE MINISTER ON HIS TOUR OF THE EXHIBITION, INCLUDING THE AMBASSADORS OF FRANCE AND THE UNITED STATES.

THE EXHIBITION INCLUDED PLANS AND PHOTOGRAPHS OF COCODY, A DISTRICT OF ABIDJAN, WHERE 126 ACRES (52 HECTARES) HAVE BEEN SCHEDULED FOR DEVELOPMENT.

AMONG THE LARGEST PROJECTS IS THE NEW SEAPORT TO BE BUILT AT SAN PEDRO. CONSTRUCTION IS ENVISAGED IN THREE STAGES. THE FIRST TWO STAGES, FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW TOWN OF 25,000 PEOPLE, HAVE ALREADY BEEN PLANNED. THE THIRD STAGE, TO EXPAND THE TOWN TO 100,000 INHABITANTS BY 1985, IS CURRENTLY ON THE DRAWING BOARD.

FURTHER MAJOR PROJECTS IN ABIDJAN, WHICH WOULD HELP MAKE THE CAPITAL THE "PEARL" OF AFRICA IN THE WORDS OF M. KOUASSI, INCLUDED NEW UNIVERSITY AND AIRPORT LAYOUTS.
