    On April 7--9 the 17th traditional swimming competition between the GDR and the USSR was held in Leningrad. Both teams included Olympic champions and world and European record holders. The Soviet swimmers grabbed the initiative since the very opening of the tournament.

    In the 200 m butterfly race, the two contenders for the first place were Roger Pittel of the GDR and Mikhail Gorelik. The Soviet swimmer won the event and set a new USSR record in the process.

    Vladimir Salnikov from Leningrad won the 1500 m freestyle event, clocking the best time in the season--15.9.73.

    In the 400 m complex race Sergei Fesenko set a new European record covering the distance in 4.25.25. sec.

    In the women's division the GDR's leadership was indisputable. They took the first three places in the 200 m freestyle. The first in this event was European champion Barbara Krause.

    Olympic champion Andrea Pollack set a new world record by winning the 200 m butterfly race in 2. min. 11.20 sec.

    Yulia Bogdanova from Leningrad won the 100 m breast-stroke race, and set a new world record (2 min 33.32 sec) in the 200 m breast-stroke. This is quite an achievement for the swimmer, who is only 13 years old.

    Among the people who have come to watch the tournament, there were Vice-President of International Olympic Committee and Spain's Ambassador to the USSR Juan Antonio Samaranc, and Sergei Pavlov, chairman of the USSR State Committee for Physical Culture and Sports.
