Again it was Surrey's 'Terrible-Twins' Laker and Lock with Australia almost in their clutches. Pinning?
Again it was Surrey's 'Terrible-Twins' Laker and Lock with Australia almost in their clutches. Pinning the batsmen down with their unpredictable spin bowling they once more proved to be the dread of Australian batsmen. VISNEWS filmed the 'backbone' of English cricket during fourth days play Jan 13 in the third test at Sydney, Australia.
Within ten minutes the Australian first innings score plunged from 197 for 3 to 208 for 6. Signs of hysteria among the batsmen from "down under" brought England back into the game. Mackay and Davidson pulled the innings around with scores of 57 and 71 respectively. Fast bowler Freddie Trueman separated them by sending Mackay's off stump spinning...clean bowled.
All out for 357 Australia were set to demolish England. Trevor Baily was left to face one over from 'Chukka' Meckiff. An indifferent ball pushed for one run and stumps were drawn for the day.
Result of the match was a draw. England declared their second innings at 287 for 7. With a first innings lead of 138 runs Australian batsmen were set to get 150 runs in as many minutes. Seemingly content with a draw they quietly played out time.
England still have a chance, however, of retaining the Ashes -- if they win the next two tests. They have lost two and drawn one of the deciding five.
