  • Description

A crowd of more than 4-thousand Croatians took part in a demonstration outside the Yugoslav consulate in the Sydney-suburb of Double Bay today.

Hundreds of policemen on foot and in cars and trucks were deployed in front of the consulate and surrounding streets.

There were reinforcements on call in nearby suburbs and three police rescue-vehicles were parked in a nearby street. After a meeting in Double Bay Park, the marchers, waving flags and placards marched to the consulate in Knox Street, singing patriotic songs and shouting slogans. The marchers formed a ring around the block where the consulate stands. There were few incidents and a police spokesman, described the demonstrators as well behaved.

A spokesman for the demonstrators said the demonstration was intended as a nonviolent means of bringing the plight of Croats in Yugoslavia to the attention of Australians.

He claimed that Croats wanted freedom as a separate nation, adding that as a part of Yugoslavia, Croatians were being victimised. The spokesman said the Croatians were particularly angry about recent purges of Croatians in Yugoslavia and the arrest of six hundred students in Yugoslavia two weeks ago.
