  • Description

Sporadic clashes between left and right-wing forces in Lebanon have continued to take place -- despite the major successes of Syrian peacekeeping forces in bringing the 19-month-old civil war to a near halt.

SYNOPSIS: The village of Bint Jbail, in the shadow of a hill marking the Israeli border to the south, was damaged over the weekend (November 20-21) in an exchange of artillery and machine-gun fire between right and left-wing troops. The clash came as about 30,000 Syrian troops were steadily sweeping across the nation imposing peace by force under an Arab League mandate. It also took place on the eve of the nation's 3rd anniversary of its independence from France. There were no official ceremonies on Monday (November 22) to mark the occasion, but right-wing forces held a large rally to celebrate it on the eastern outskirts of Beirut, the capital. Meanwhile, one agency report said the Syrians appeared to be avoiding going near the Israeli border to impose peace in villages like Bint Jbail.
