  • Description

General Yakubu Gowon ,the Nigeria Head of State, on Saturday (21 December) inspected the site of Festival Village in Lagos -- being built in preparation for next November's World Black and African Festival of the Arts.

Festival Village, which is to accommodate most of the celebration's expected guests from all over the world, is rising on 1,000 acres of land reserved for 11,000 housing units. More than 23,000 workers ar employed on the project.

During his five-hour visit, General Gowon said he was impressed by the rapid rate of progress on the development -- which he described as "a peaceful revolution" -- and declared that the village should now fittingly be renamed the Black Arts Festival Town. He added that he could now "boldly tell the world" to come to the World Black and African Festival of the Arts because he could offer assurances that all visitors could be accommodated comfortably.

Contractors assured General Gowon that the festival site would be ready by next September -- two months ahead of schedule.
