  • Description

VISNEWS cameras Feb. 10 filmed rescue workers still burrowing into the wreckage of a St. Louis tenement building in a search for dead and injured. At least 19 people died and more than 300 were injured when a tornado ripped through the sleeping city Feb. 10.

Within a moment of its striking scores of buildings were demolished and many in flames. Trees were uprooted ... a 575 foot tower of a television station, built to withstand winds of 110 miles per hour, crashed to the ground ... A tall brick chimney toppled over but fell clear of a home for women workers where 150 were asleep .. gas mains were fractured .. power lines whipped away .. debris flew through the air.

The tornado took only two minutes to wreak this damage.

Spectators described it as a giant blue flask and the roar of a tremendous automobile racing its engine.

Hardest hit was the tenement district, mostly occupied by Negroes. 16 bodies were taken from the ruins of buildings. Of the 16 all but three were Negroes. Seven of the dead were young children.

Following the same path, coming in from the south-west, the tornado followed the same path as the one in September 1927 which killed 100 persons in the city.
