Background: In Kenya, heads of state and ministers from all over the world join hundreds of thousands of Kenyans this week (0800 GMT 31 August) for the funeral of Africa's elder statesman Jomo Kenyatta. The funeral plans called for the President's body to be carried on a gun carriage from his official residence on a hill overlooking Nairobi and then laid to rest with full military honours in a special mausoleum in the grounds by Parliament House. Like Lenin in Moscow and Mao Tse-Tung in Peking, his body will be on permanent display.

SYNOPSIS: Differences of political opinion are land aside in a universal show of respect for President Kenyatta. His fight for independence inspired many Africans, and President Williams Tolbert of Liberia was one of the heads of independence African states to arrive for the funeral. He was met by the Kenyan Minister for Water Development, Dr. Julius Kiano, who was also on hand to welcome the United States delegation.

The leader of the United States delegation was Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, who helped draw up Kenya's constitution. With him was the United States representative at the United Nations, Mr Andrew Young; Mrs Coretta King, the widow of black civil rights leader Martin Luther King and President Carter's son, Jeff.
