    THE FIFTH CONFERENCE OF AFRICAN AND MALAGASY RAILWAY TECHNICIANS OPENED ON MONDAY (21 FEBRUARY) IN YAOUNDE, CAMEROUN.

    THE COUNTRIES REPRESENTED AT THE CONFERENCE ARE CONGO KINSHASHA, IVORY COAST, ALGERIA, CAMEROUN; DAHOMEY, MADAGASCAR, MALI, MOROCCO, NIGERIA AND SENEGAL.

    REPRESENTATIVES OF THE FRENCH AND WEST GERMAN RAILWAYS WERE ALSO PRESENT.

    OPENING THE CONFERENCE THE CAMEROUN PRESIDENT, AHMADOU AHIDOO, STRESSED THE VITAL ROLE WHICH RAILWAYS PLAY IN THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF AFRICAN COUNTRIES.

    DURING THEIR VISIT DELEGATES INSPECTED THE TRANSCAMEROUNAIS RAILWAY LINE WHICH IS NOW BEING BUILT. SO FAR 50 KILOMETRES HAVE BEEN COMPLETED BY THE ITALIAN COMPANY, COGEFAR.

    A SECOND 300 KILOMETRES SECTION IS BEING PLANNED, WITH BRANCH LINES TO NAGUI IN THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC AND TO THE TOHAD.
