    WITH THE FIRST POST-INDEPENDENCE GENERAL ELECTIONS IN KENYA NEXT SATURDAY (DECEMBER 6), THE CAMPAIGNS OF THE CANDIDATES ARE INTENSIFYING.

    ABOUT 600 CANDIDATES ARE COMPETING FOR THE 158 SEATS IN KENYA'S NATIONAL ASSEMBLY. THEY ARE CAMPAIGNING ON THE TICKET OF THE RULING KENYA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION (KANU) PARTY WHICH IS ALONE IN THE FIELD.

    CIVIL SERVANTS AND MEMBERS OF GOVERNMENT-SPONSORED BODIES HAVE HAD TO RESIGN FROM THEIR JOBS IN ORDER TO STAND FOR ELECTIONS.

    PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA HAS APPEALED TO ALL ELECTION CANDIDATES TO CONDUCT THEIR CAMPAIGN'S PEACEFULLY IN A SPIRIT OF SPORTSMANSHIP.

    KENYA'S COMMISSIONER OF POLICE WARNED CANDIDATES AND THEIR SUPPORTERS AGAINST PROVOKING DISTURBANCES OR INCIDENTS.

    AS IN MANY COUNTRIES, THE YOUNG ARE EAGER TO REPLACE THE OLD GUARD IN POLITICS, AND MANY ARE STANDING IN THE HOPE OF GETTING GREATER SAY IN THEIR COUNTRY'S AFFAIRS.

    PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA WAS NOMINATED UNOPPOSED AS PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATE FOR GATUNDU, NEAR HIS HOME. THE VICE-PRESIDENT, MR DANIEL ARAP MOI, AND THE MINISTER FOR LANDS AND SETTLEMENT, MR JACKSON AGAINE WERE ALSO UNOPPOSED IN THEIR CONSTITUENCIES. BUT IN MOST OTHERS THERE ARE AT LEAST THREE OR FOUR CANDIDATES, AND IT IS EXPECTED THAT A NUMBER OF NEW FACES WILL BE SEEN AT THE NEXT PARLIAMENT.
