TURBULENT MOUNT ETNA IN SICILY HAS ERUPTED ONCE MORE. THE 11,000 FT. MOUNTAIN HAS CAST?

  • Description

TURBULENT MOUNT ETNA IN SICILY HAS ERUPTED ONCE MORE. THE 11,000 FT. MOUNTAIN HAS CAST OUT A COLUMN OF THICK, WHITE SMOKE AND HAS SHOWERED DUST OVER A WIDE AREA OF THE ISLAND. THERE HAS ALSO BEEN A FLOW OF LAVA, 240-FEET WIDE, GUSHING DOWN TO ITS BASE. HOWEVER, VOLCANOLOGISTS HAVE STATED THERE WAS NO CAUSE FOR ALARM.

MOUNTAIN ETNA IS AN ACTIVE VOLCANO ON THE EAST COAST OF SICILY. IT IS ALSO THE HIGHEST VOLCANO IN EUROPE. IT PERIODICALLY ERUPTS AND IN 1928 FEARS WERE HELD FOR THE SAFETY OF THE ISLAND'S INHABITANTS. ON THAT OCCASION THE MESSINA-CATANIA RAILWAY LINE WAS BLOCKED BY STREAMS OF LAVA MORE THAN 100 FEET WIDE. ON NOVEMBER 7 THE LAVA REACHED THE SEA. TWO TOWNS IN ITS PATH WERE ALMOST COMPLETELY WIPED OUT.
