  • Description

The first rice crop from the new Colleambally irrigation scheme, near Griffith in New South Wales will reach Sydney markets shortly. More than 110-thousand tons is expected to be harvested in the next ten weeks in the Riverina district.

Twenty six farms have been established in the new irrigation district, and by next year, the Rice Marketing Board said, there may be fifty farms. The Manager of the Board, Mr. C. E. Dalton, said that a new variety of rice called Calrose, is being grown in the area. He said that this was a larger and finer strain than had been produced previously. This year's harvest is expected to be worth about two and a half million pounds.

The two harvesters seen in this film, reap 85 tons of rough rice a day. It requires nearly one and a half tons of rough rice to manufacture one ton of which table rice. The rice is loaded into trucks and taken by road to the mills for removal of the husk, whitening, and cleaning.
