Background: The twelfth Regional Conference for the Near East of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation opened in Amman, Jordan, on Saturday (August 31) -- with a warning from its Director-General, Dr. Adeke Boerma, that the world would soon face a famine unless developed states stepped up their food production.

World Food stocks were dwindling and there would be a sudden danger if drought struck at some of the producing areas, he said at a news conference held at the opening.

The ten-day conference precedes the World Food Conference to be held in Rome, Italy, in November.
