  • Description

THE UNEASY PEACE OVER THE SUEZ CANAL, INTACT SINCE THE MASSIVE BOMBARDMENT LAST TUESDAY WHICH SET PRESIDENT NASSER'S OIL REFINERY ABLAZE, IS STILL BEING WATCHED OVER BY THE SLENDER TEAM OF UNITED NATIONS OBSERVERS IN THE AREA. AND THE TENSION IS SLOWLY SUBSIDING.

THE JOB OF THE UN OBSERVERS IS A DIFFICULT ONE. THE ARMIES OF ISRAEL AND EGYPT ARE ONLY THREE HUNDRED METRES APART, AND A NEW VIOLATION OF THE CEASE-FIRE COULD BREAK OUT ANY MINUTE.

AND THE UN OBSERVERS THEMSELVES ARE A LONG WAY BELOW STRENGTH. ALTHOUGH 14 COUNTRIES HAVE SENT MEN TO SUEZ, ON THE ISRAELI SIDE THERE ARE ONLY FOUR OBSERVATION POSTS, WITH 24 MEN TO CREW THEM. THE UN OFFICIALS DON'T WORK AT NIGHT, AND AT ANY ONE TIME THERE ARE AT MOST ONLY TEN MEN ON DUTY ON THE ISRAELI SIDE.

GENERAL DAYAN, THE ISRAELI MILITARY LEADER, SAID TO AN INTERVIEW THAT HE WAS WELL AWARE OF THE LIMITATIONS THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICIALS FOUND THEMSELVES IN.
