    VOTERS IN NORTH LEBANON WENT TO THE POLLS YESTERDAY, (SUNDAY), IN THE FIRST STAGE OF THE GENERAL ELECTION FOR A NEW 99-MEMBER CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES. TO ENABLE STRICT SECURITY MEASURES DURING THE VOTING THE ELECTION IS BEING PHASED OVER FOUR SUNDAYS, ENDING MAY 3.

    POLLING WAS REPORTED TO BE GENERALLY QUIET, BUT THE GOVERNOR OF NORTH LEBANON, MR. JOSEPH SALAMEH SAID THAT SIX PEOPLE HAD BEEN ARRESTED FOLLOWING A NUMBER OF MINOR INCIDENTS. THESE INVOLVED FIST FIGHTS AND THE STONING OF CARS, ALTHOUGH NO INJURIES OR DAMAGE WERE REPORTED.

    THE KARAMI GOVERNMENT RESIGNED TWO MONTHS AGO AND SINCE THEN THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC HAS BEEN IN THE HANDS OF A CARETAKER ADMINISTRATION.

    ONE IMPORTANT TASK FOR THE NEW CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES WILL BE THE ELECTION OF A NEW PRESIDENT, OR AMENDMENT OF THE CONSTITUTION IF PRESIDENT FUAD CHEHAB IS TO CONTINUE IN OFFICE AFTER HIS TERM EXPIRES IN SEPTEMBER.
