IN KUALA LUMPUR TODAY (SUNDAY) POLICE LIFTED THE CURFEW PUT ON THE MALAYSIAN CAPITAL AFTER YESTERDAY'S RIOTS BY ABOUT 1,500 YOUTHS AND GIRLS PROTESTING AGAINST THE ARREST OF LEFT-WING LEADERS. TROOPS AND POLICE CONTINUED TO PATROL THE STREETS OF KUALA LUMPUR TODAY, BUT THE CAPITAL APPEARED QUIET.

THREE LEFT-WING OPPOSITION LEADERS WERE DETAINED LAST MONTH ON CHARGES WITH INDONESIA TO SET UP A GOVERNMENT-IN-EXILE, & CONSPIRING TO RAISE ARMED REBELLION. THE ROUND-UP WENT ON TODAY WITH THE ARREST OF MR. DAVID, WHO IS A FORMER PARLIAMENTARIAN.

YESTERDAY'S RIOTS WERE SPARKED BY A GOVERNMENT BAN ON A PROCESSION PLANNED TO PROTEST AGAINST THE ARREST OF MORE OFFICIALS OF THE SOCIALIST FRONT, WHICH IS ANTI-MALAYSIA. POLICE USED TEAR GAS AND BATONS ON THE RIOTERS, MAINLY CHINESE YOUTHS AND GIRLS.

THE DEMONSTRATORS CARRIED PLACARDS WITH SLOGANS SUCH AS "MALAYSIA IS NEO-COLONIALISM", "OUT WITH THE BRITISH", "ASSASSINATE THE BRITISH" AND "THERE IS NO DEMOCRACY". AS THE POLICE WERE ARRESTING ABOUT 100 DEMONSTRATORS, INCLUDING NINE WOMEN, HUNDREDS OF STEEL-HELMETED TROOPS CORDONED OFF KUALA LUMPUR'S MAIN THOROUGHFARE.

AT THE HEIGHT OF THE UPROAR, SOME OF THE RIOTERS RUSHED TO THE UNITED STATES INFORMATION SERVICE LIBRARY AND SMASHED EVERY WINDOW OF THE GROUND-FLOOR OFFICES.
