  • Description

AN ESTIMATED 30,000 ANTI-VIETNAM WAR DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) IN THE LARGEST PEACE PROTEST IN CALIFORNIAN HISTORY.
THE PARADE OF MARCHERS STRETCHED 28 BLOCKS, AND INCLUDED STUDENTS, CLERGYMEN, BEATNIKS, BUSINESSMEN AND WOMEN -- SOME CARRYING BABIES OR LEADING SMALL CHILDREN BY THE HAND.
A ROCK-AND-ROLL BAND GOT THE PARADE AWAY TO ITS START. THE BAND DROVE IN A TRUCK WITH A HUGE BANNER PROCLAIMING: "WEST COAST HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AGAINST THE WAR."
THE FOUR-MILE MARCH ENDED IN A "PEACE FAIR" AT SAN FRANCISCO'S KEZAR STADIUM, WHERE THE ROCK BAND PROVIDED ENTERTAINMENT BEFORE SPEECHES BEGAN.
INTERMITTENT RAIN SPRINKLED THE DEMONSTRATORS FROM TIME TO TIME, BUT IT WAS NOT HEAVY ENOUGH TO BREAK UP THE GROUP.
THE PROTEST COINCIDED WITH A SIMILAR, BUT MUCH LARGER DEMONSTRATION IN NEW YORK.
