  • Description

President Nixon of the United States, visiting Italian Leaders at the start of his five-nation European tour, made a surprise trip to Rome airport on Monday, to meet 26 American former hostages of the Palestinian guerrillas, who had flown in from Cyprus aboard a special airliner. The hostages were released by the Palestinians in Amman on Saturday.

The President and Italian Prime Minister Emilio Colombo flew by helicopter to Rome's Fiumicino airport after holding talks in a Renaissance villa on the outskirts of the city.

The surprise visit interrupted a schedule for the day which also included an audience with the Pope, after which the President flew to the U.S. carrier Saratoga, with the Sixth fleet in the Mediterranean.

The former hostages flew into Nicosia on Sunday in a Red Cross aircraft, and set off for Rome and New York on Monday after being given a medical check-up and new clothing.

Mr. Nixon spent about 20 minutes talking to the former hostages, some of whom left their plane to talk with him on the sunlit tarmac.

He then left the airport by helicopter, to fly back to a state luncheon in the Quirinale Presidential Palace.
