    Shortly after his arrival in Damascus, Mr. Riad said that there were misapprehensions on the part of some in Lebanon that the Arab League's resolutions on the despatch of the Arab Peace Force were intended to impose a solution on Lebanon, and that the force would take sides. He said that the Arab league was not going to impose anything on Lebanon, but would co-operate with Lebanese authorities to establish peace and security.
    The Peace Force is to be raised from units from Suban, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Algeria and the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO). Mr. Riad has said that the probable strength of the force will be between 6,000 and 10,000 men.

    Background: +++WRONG CLIP ATTACHED+++

    Syria's President Hafez Al-Assad has told the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Mr. Mahmoud Riad, that Syria will make every effort possible to implement the League's resolutions on bringing peace to Lebanon. Mr. Riad met the President in Damascus on Sunday (13 June), and he described the meeting as "very positive". It was just one of a number of meetings that the President has been having with Arab leaders over the last few days.
    SYNOPSIS: On Saturday, the Prime Minister of Libya, Mr. Abdel Salam Jalloud, was in Damascus, accompanied by the Algerian Education Minister, Mr. Abdul Karim Mahmoud, to continue their shuttle diplomacy between Syria and the Lebanese capital, Beirut, in an effort to end the fourteen-month-old Lebanese conflict. While in Damascus, Mr. Jalloud was quoted as saying that Libyan troops had taken up positions in Lebanon.
    On the same day, President Assad has a meeting with the Foreign Minister of Qatar, Shiek Suhaim Bin Hamad Al-Thani. Also present was the Syrian Foreign Minister, Mr. Abdul-Halim Khaddam. Qatar is a member of the Arab League which is helping to organise a peace force from Arab states to replace the three brigades of Syrian troops that entered Lebanon eleven days ago.
