Background: Marshal Lon Nol, now firmly installed as head of state in the Khmer Republic, has promised an eventual return to constitutional government.
Troops still guard the National Assembly building in Phnom Penh, meanwhile, although the Assembly was stripped of its power five months ago. Now the last significant organ of constitutional power, the 16-man cabinet, has been dismissed. Marshal Lon Nol sacked its members on Saturday (March 11), just twenty-four hours after taking over as head of state, after Cheng Heng announced his resignation from the post.
SYNOPSIS: The National Assembly building in Phnom Penh, capital of the Khmer Republic, guarded by troops following the take-over as head of state by Prime Minister Marshal Lon Nol. The Assembly itself, however, stripped of it power five months ago, and now the last organ of constitutional power -- the 16-man cabinet -- has been dismissed. Marshal Nol dissolved it on Saturday, only 24 hours after taking over power. Phnom Penh remains peaceful, however, and Marshal Lon Nol has promised an eventual return to constitutional government. He declined to say anything about forming a new government in the near future, and when asked by reporters why he had annulled a new constitution which was being drafted by the National Assembly, said only that it had" created uneasiness" in the country.
