Interviewer: "Mrs. Jerkowski, as the Democratic Precincts Man of the 131st precinct here in Gary, did you register some fictitious names on the Voting Register?"
Mrs. Jerkowski: "Yes, I did."
Interviewer: "Why did you do that?"
Mrs. Jerkowski: "Well, because we were out to beat Mr Hatcher."
Interviewer: "The Negro candidate?"
Mrs Jerkowski: "Not because he's a Negro, but because we had reason to suspect his loyalty to this country."
Interviewer: "Who were going to cast these votes in the election?"
Mrs Jerkowski: "Certain people."
Interviewer: "Now, just to get this system straight, Mr. Jerkowski. Mrs Krupa is the head of the local Democratic party, is he not?"
Mrs Jerkowski: "He is the county chairman of the Democratic party."
Interviewer: "He is also the Clerk of the Circuit Court, isn't he?"
Mrs. Jerkowski: "Yes sir."
Interviewer: "So he's a judicial official, and he's also a party official?"
Mrs Jerkowski: "Yes sir. (INAUDIBLE)"
Interviewer: "He's also Secretary of the Election Board, is he not?"
Mrs Jerkowski: "Yes, I believe he is."
Interviewer: "So how do you impartial elections in this town?"
Mrs Jerkowski: I don't know - all I know is that I certainly hope ny part in this investigation - that for the last two weeks I have worked with the F.B.I.- unless I had tried to hide my position, the reason that may be someday we will have an honest election in Gary, and maybe all over the nation. That maybe stronger laws will be passed, State laws, and Federal laws to guarantee the every man exercises only one vote."

Background: Dispute continues over the election of Richard G. Hatcher, the Negro mayor of Gary, Indiana, USA. Both sides have made suggestions of voting irregularities, and on election day. Tuesday 7 November, a local returning officer - a Democratic precincts official - admitted to registering false names on the voting roll.
As the dispute simmered yesterday, National Guardsmen were ordered into parts of the city. A record 75% poll registered on Tuesday, unofficial polls giving Hatcher a narrow lead over the white Republican opponent, Mr Joseph B. Rididgan.
