Dispute continues over the election of Richard G. Hatcher, the Negro mayor of Gary, Indiana, USA. Both sides have made suggestions of voting irregularities, and on election day. Tuesday 7 November, a local returning officer - a Democratic precincts official - admitted to registering false names on the voting roll.
As the dispute simmered yesterday, National Guardsmen were ordered into parts of the city. A record 75% poll registered on Tuesday, unofficial polls giving Hatcher a narrow lead over the white Republican opponent, Mr Joseph B. Rididgan.
