  • Description

Portugal's moderate Prime Minister Admiral Pinheiro de Azevedo yesterday (Saturday, 25 October) received a massive demonstration of support in the conservative north of the country when he paid his first visit to Oporto since coming to power.

Some sixty thousand people crammed into the main square in the town to hear him call for unity and patriotism during the grave crisis now facing Portugal.

At his side during the speech was socialist leader Mario Soares and both men were greeted by prolonged cheers and frequent bursts of applause during their addresses to the crowds.

Despite the warmth of his reception, the Prime Minister said after the rally that Portugal still faced the threat of civil war. And illustration of the deep divisions which exist in the country came when hundreds of anti-Communists harassed cars belonging to Communist newspapers and radio stations in the city.
