    DESPITE PREDICTIONS OF A LACK OF PUBLIC INTEREST IN THE UNITED STATES PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION THERE WAS AN UNUSUALLY HEAVY POLL YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) WITH UP TO 75 MILLION PEOPLE TURNING OUT TO VOTE. AMONG THE EARLY VOTERS WERE RETIRING PRESIDENT LYNDON JOHNSON, DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE HUBERT HUMPHREY, SPIRO AGNEW, THE REPUBLICAN VICE-PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE AND THEIR FAMILIES.

    MR. JOHNSON AND HIS WIFE, LADY BIRD, DROVE 15 MILES FROM HIS TEXAS RANCH TO THE POLLING STATION IN JOHNSON CITY. THEY ARRIVED TWO HOURS AFTER VOTING STARTED. THIS WAS FIRST ELECTION IN 31 YEARS IN WHICH MR. JOHNSON WAS NOT STANDING FOR ANY PUBLIC OFFICE.

    MR. HUMPHREY AND HIS WIFE CAST THEIR VOTES AT THE MARYSVILLE TOWN HALL NEAR THEIR HOME IN WAVERLY, MINNESOTA. THEY ARRIVED SHORTLY BEFORE NINE IN THE MORNING AND THEY WERE THE 41ST AND 42ND PEOPLE TO VOTE THERE.

    MR. AGNEW, WHO IS GOVERNOR OF MARYLAND, VOTED IN THE MARYLAND STATE CAPITAL OF ANNAPOLIS AT A POLLING STATION IN A FIREHOUSE. IT TOOK HIM JUST 43 SECONDS TO CAST HIS BALLOT.
