  • Description

The Governor of Istanbul has declared a "state of alert" in the Turkish capital after the discovery and confirmation of an outbreak of para-cholera in areas of the city. The Governor, Mr. Vefa Poyraz, has ordered all medical personnel to remain on duty and over one thousand beds in three hospitals to be reserved for cholera cases.

The official death toll now stands at 25, but unofficial sources are putting the number as high as 50. Some 500 people are officially stated to be in hospital.

Strict sanitary measures are being taken in the affected area of the city, where schools have been closed and people told not to leave their houses for five days, if a case of the disease has been found. Extra strong chlorination of the whole city water supply is being undertaken and daily inspections are to be carried out in food and drink plants.

In Istanbul queues are forming from early morning outside the emergency dispensaries opened in each district for free inoculation against cholera.

The last serious outbreak of cholera in Turkey was in 1912 during the Balkan war when over 15 thousand people died in Istanbul alone.
