  • Description

Egyptian President Anwar Sadat today (Friday, 27 December) led the state funeral of Field Marshal Ahmad Ismail, the nation's Defence Minister who died in London on Wednesday (25 December).

The cortege, watched by huge crowds, wound from the Omar Makram mosque in Cairo, with Marshal Ismail's coffin draped with one of the Egyptian flags hoisted on the Israeli Bar Lev Line after it had been taken during the war in October, 1973.

It was Egypt's initial success in that war which crowned Marshal Ismail's success and made him a hero to the Egyptian people.

Today, his mourners included his successor as Minister of Defence, General Abdel Gamassi, who was appointed to the office yesterday.

Marshal Ismail, 57, died in London while being treated for lung cancer.

SYNOPSIS: In Cairo today (27 December) the state funeral of Egypt's Minister of Defence and popular hero, Marshal Ahmad Ismail brings large numbers of government and military leaders -- including President Anwar Sadat -- to pay their last respects to the architect of the modern Egyptian armed forces.

The cortege wound from the Omar Makram mosque, through the streets of Cairo...watched by enormous crowds, for whom Marshal Ismail was a heroic figure... a standing accorded to him by Egypt's massive initial success in the October war against Israel in 1973.

Among his mourners was General Abdel Gamassi, his successor as Defence Minister.

So great was the enthusiasm in the Egyptian capital today, that disappointed students unable to see the funeral, clashed with police while the procession continued.
